The Cannan That Never Came
HOW LAZARUS CHAKWERA BURNED MALAWI AND WHY PETER MUTHARIKA CANNOT SAY SO
There is a clinical condition called anosognosia — the brain losing the ability to perceive its own damage. The patient calmly insists the paralysed arm still works. The injury is real. The seeing apparatus has been switched off.
On 22 October 2025, after Malawians removed him from office by record smashing 24 percentage points, Lazarus Chakwera went on national television and confessed he had been running the country, in his own words,"like a headless chicken." He offered it as a defense. It landed as a clinical disclosure—three finance ministers, two reserve bank governors, K2.8 trillion through the Lombard window, and 5 years of what Malawians came to call "the Canaan that never came"
THE INHERITANCE
June 2020. Chakwera inherited 8% inflation, 3 months of reserves, an IMF programme in good standing — the easiest entry ticket in SADC. Hichilema took Lusaka in 2021 mid-default and stabilised it. Mnangagwa walked into Harare with no IMF programme, no reserves, sanctions, a fractured currency — and by 2025 cut inflation from 95.8% to 3.8%. Each was handed harder ground than Lilongwe.
By October 2025 Malawi sat at 33% inflation, half a month of reserves, 93% debt to GDP, with a kwacha in the bottom decile of global currency performance — at the table with Argentina, Lebanon, Venezuela. Reading the IMF Article IV series and the Bloomberg currency tables, Malawi 2020 to 2025 ranks among the 5 worst peacetime currency collapses on earth this century.
He had sold and promised Malawians 1 million jobs and three meals a day. He outdid all failures before him, The country got fuel queues, empty maize sheds, and an IMF programme that walked away from him mid-cycle. Look at the record and you cannot tell whether the man did not know or did not care. Or BOTH.
THE MAN BEHIND THE COLLAR
Lazarus Chakwera was anything but the man he asked Malawi to believe he was. The clerical collar was a costume. The pulpit voice was stagecraft. Behind both sat a patronage operator who spent 5 years obsessed with prosecuting one private citizen — Shepherd Bushiri — while the kwacha bled out and three Finance Ministers cycled through Capital Hill carrying the same printer.
Tonse Alliance was sold as servant leadership. After Chilima's death the alliance was abandoned, the reform pillars walked away from, the country governed alone with selective justice. State institutions were turned on opponents while protected actors took ration contracts and armoured vehicle deals. Strip the collar and what remained was a vendetta with state powers.
THE BUSHIRI FILE
In a wealth masterclass in South Africa, Bushiri delivered a sentence I have not been able to put down. A currency is held up by what a country produces, what it sells, what it keeps, and what it saves. Production. Export. Retention. Savings. Everything else is noise. The cleanest one-line monetary doctrine to come out of an African pulpit — and the Malawian state spent 5 years trying to silence the man who said it instead of applying it.
February 2021. His daughter Israella, 8 years old, sat on the tarmac at Kamuzu International Airport for 6 days. An air ambulance to Nairobi waited on the apron. The Director of Public Prosecutions, Steven Kayuni, personally carried the paperwork grounding her. Chakwera authorised it. Six days on a runway, a child used as leverage, sovereign territory dressed as the rule of law. Kayuni is gruesome evil. The man in the collar who signed off on him is gruesome evil with better lighting.
THE LOMBARD GANG
Put names to the damage. Simplex Chithyola Banda — the BBC Confessor, the Finance Minister who admitted on air that Treasury did not know its own borrowing position. Wilson Banda — the Drawer Man, the Reserve Bank Governor who managed the kwacha by feel. Mafuta Mwale — the Chair Warmer at Capital Hill. Steven Kayuni — the Tarmac Warden. Around them, the rubble of the Tonse machine: Saulos Chilima charged in the Zuneth Sattar bribery network before his death — the same network indicted in the UK for paying senior Malawian officials over $50 million for anti-riot gear, food rations, and armoured vehicles. The AIP fertiliser scandal. The Greenbelt Initiative leakages. ACB Director Martha Chizuma forced out in May 2024 for refusing to play, telling the country on her way out that she had no political support to do her job. The headless chicken at the head of the table. The Lombard Gang. K2.8 trillion printed through one window in 5 years.
They are not in retreat. Three are challenging the audits in court. Two are running cleansing tours through Pretoria, London and Brussels, converting visa stamps into rehabilitation. MCP still holds 52 parliamentary seats. The judges they appointed remain on the bench. The journalists they funded are drafting the columns to brand Mutharika austere and vindictive before the kwacha stops bleeding. The first organised run on the kwacha will not come from foreign markets — it will come from accounts inside the country the Gang still controls. They engineer the panic and blame the doctor for the relapse. That is the playbook.
THE DOCTOR
4 October 2025. Peter Mutharika took the chair Chakwera insisted for 5 years was beyond him. The country had been told for those same 5 years that the man was too old to govern, too unfit to think, too American to be Malawian, and too tired to lead. The country handed him a 56.8% mandate after spending those 5 years studying the alternative.
The man they called unfit had taught international economic law at Washington University in St Louis for 40 years. The man they called a foreign stooge had counselled the African Union on continental trade. The man they called too old to think had buried his brother Bingu at Mphunzi in April 2012 without ever once taking the bait of revenge politics. The CV they spent 5 years insulting has more African statecraft in its footnotes than the entire Lombard cabinet had in its lifetimes.
His task: stop the printing, let the kwacha trade, tell the truth about food and fuel before patronage. Seven months in he has signed free secondary education into law from January 2026, brought 200,000 metric tons of maize across the Zambian border to feed the 4 million Malawians the previous government left hungry, and banned raw mineral exports to keep $500 million inside the country every year.
Cardoso did exactly this in Lagos in 2023 and the parallel premium compressed within months. Guvamatanga and Mthuli Ncube did it in Harare and inflation fell from 95.8% to 3.8% in a single cycle. Year 1 of stabilisation delivers a pulse to the patient. Singapore comes later. Chakwera sold milk and honey for 5 years. Mutharika is selling stability and shipping it weekly.
THE CORRIDOR
The only stone the Gang has left to throw is the Amaryllis hotel file — and even Chakwera abandoned that brief halfway through, because his own people knew the smell predated this office. Reaching for it now confesses the cupboard is empty.
The patient which is Malawi is breathing, The alarms are off. The Lombabrd Gang is in the corridor praying for Malawi to cardiac arrest — and they have brought their own pillow.
